Pend Oreille County Forestry Contest

Indian Creek Community Forest | Thu, Oct 9th - 9am

This one-day, hands-on event offers local youth the opportunity to explore forestry and natural resources professions, and to test their skills in tree identification, tool identification, map reading, and orienteering (compass and pacing). This competition is coordinated by the Kalispel Natural Resources Department and the Pend Oreille Conservation District, and is supported by local school districts, state agencies, and industry experts.

Each student or team should bring:

    • Compass
    • Clinometer
    • DBH Tape
    • Basic Calculator
    • Clipboard
    • #2 Pencil

This event will take place outdoors regardless of weather conditions. Participants should be prepared to work in inclement weather and bring rain gear, warm clothes, and closed-toed shoes. Snacks will be provided.

Indian Creek Community Forest

About the location

Indian Creek Community Forest is a vibrant 410-acre community forest north of Newport, WA, owned and managed by the Kalispel Tribe of Indians. This property is the perfect setting for outdoor environmental education and recreation, with resources that include a native plant nursery, numerous walking trails, and an educational forest.

This study guide will help students learn to determine slope, use a compass, and use pacing to measure distance. These are basic forestry skills, practiced almost daily by professional foresters to navigate in the woods.

This guide will help students learn the most basic skill needed in forestry - the ability to recognize the trees and plants in an area. This includes the list of Washington native trees & plants that need to be identified during the contest.
